About AKUA

AKUA creates foods that can feed the planet sustainably while reversing climate change, and restoring health to our world's oceans. All of our products are made from ocean-farmed kelp, which is one of the most sustainable and healthy forms of food on the planet. And we’re in the business of making seaweeds - or, as we like to say - seagreens - taste delicious.

Our Supply Chain

Kelp farming is a zero-input crop that requires no fresh water, no fertilizer, no feed, and no arid land to grow. Kelp also filters carbon and nitrogen from the water, and creates new jobs for our coastal communities. We source our seagreens from a network of regenerative ocean farms along the Northeast coast of the USA. The first seaweed we are working with is a varietal of Kelp called Saccharina Latissima.

Kelp for Your Health

Kelp - a brown macroalgae - is overflowing with Vitamins A, D, E, B1, and B2, as well as Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium, Potassium, and Iron.

In fact, one bag of Kelp Jerky has over 100% of your daily value of B1 & B2, 80% of your daily value for Iron, and 30% of your daily intake of Magnesium.

Seaweeds support your body’s ability to absorb water and are an excellent source of Iodine that helps to support a healthy metabolism. In fact, seaweeds are one of the only foods that expand in your stomach, making you feel fuller longer.

Our Process

  • Our ocean farm structure is set into the ocean.

  • Spores are picked up from the hatchery on spools.

  • Spools of spores are then transferred to the farm site on a boat.

Our Process

  • In the autumn, the farmer ‘plants the spores’ onto the farm.

  • She applies spools of spores to 3D ocean farm model and submerges spores onto the farm.

  • The farm is checked weekly throughout the winter including the weather and water temperature, and the crop density.

Our Process

  • Our kelp harvest occurs between April - June as the water warms up.

  • Lines are brought up from the water and kelp is cut from the lines and placed into bins on a boat, ready to be transferred to our processing facility.

Our Process

  • At the processing facility, kelp is blanched, frozen, and packaged, and shipped to our production facility.

  • At the production facility, our kelp is blended with shiitake mushrooms and other superfood ingredients.

Our Process

  • Our kelp jerky mixture is then dehydrated.

  • Spices are then added and taste tested, then our Kelp Jerky is bagged, sealed and ready for shipment!
