THE JOURNEY SO FAR
AKUA’s co-founder Courtney Boyd Myers (aka CBM) first learned about regenerative ocean-farming through the Connecticut based non-profit GreenWave. She had long been hip to the health benefits of eating seaweeds and when she learned about the environmental and economic benefits too, she was hooked on getting more people to eat this virtuous sea vegetable.
On a mission to make kelp mainstream, we launched our first product “Kelp Jerky” in 2019. Kelp Jerky is sold today direct-to-consumer, in specialty grocers, and on Amazon.
With the pandemic underway and Kelp Jerky no longer new to the market, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work creating the Kelp Burger! The world's first plant-based burger made from KELP!
As May 2021 rolled around, we finally released our beloved Kelp Burgers to the world. They quickly became our top selling product, and from there we knew we were ready to start venturing into retail!
The Kelp Burger became available in retail stores and restaurants all over the US. And by July 2022, our newest product, the Krab Cake, was born!

Courtney Boyd Myers (Founder & CEO of AKUA) is an entrepreneur, environmentalist, writer, and new Mama to Romy Ocean. Prior to launching AKUA, she helped build the Summit Community, a global network of founders, creatives, and innovators. Previously, she helped market companies such as Four Sigmatic and Unframed Ice Cream. She began her career as a journalist at Forbes Magazine and The Next Web and has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business. She currently serves as an advisor to GreenWave.
Todd Powers (COO of AKUA) operations expert focused on working with early stage CPG brands to prepare them for exponential growth. Brands include: PS Snacks, Justin’s, Hope Foods, and Pangea Organics. Todd has managed unique challenges in the run up to $1mm, $3mm and $10mm in sales that required shifting strategies in financial goals, reporting, copacker relationships, supply chain and team management with clear and precise communication.
Kalli began her career in DC working in international politics and advocacy, but she quickly realized there were more exciting and impactful channels (like food!) through which she could fight for change. Searching for a more vibrant, connected, and hope-driven career & life, she moved to LA where she founded her own creative agency that catered solely to plant-based and climate-friendly brands. After a year of consulting for AKUA, Kalli became convinced that kelp can help to change the course of climate change and made the decision to join the team full-time as Head of Brand. Outside of work, you can find Kalli running pop-up yoga & fitness events around LA and chilling beachside.
